What You Need To Know About Teen Job Search And Why

Your first teen job search can seem almost impossible. Many teenagers wonder how they can themselves when they have limited or no work experience, never been through an interview and don’t even have a resume!

Your teen job search will be made easier if you follow the following tips:

1. Speak with your school guidance counsellor. Schools often keep lists of part-time positions at local companies, tutoring opportunities, babysitting needs etc.

2. Network Network, Network... tell everyone you know that you are looking for a job.

This is by far the most successful strategy. Many people searching for a job are shy or embarrassed to ask for help from others.

Truth is that most people are eager to help once they know that you are looking for a job. You don’t like to ask for help? Okay, so ask for advice, ask for information, ask for contact names.... just ask.

3. Many teens are very successful at starting their own business! You could make good money lawn mowing, babysitting, or pet sitting...

You imagination is your only limitation.

4. Apply in Person. If you do not have any contacts, applying in person is one of the best ways to find a retail job.

Just walk in when you see a Help Wanted signs in a storefront window.

If you don't see a sign in a store you would like to work in- now problem, just ask about openings. The manager will most likely be impressed by your attitude.

Many part-time jobs do not require a Resume but you should :

1. Be prepared to fill out an application. Information required for teen job search may include :

A. Age (Birth date)

B. Your address

C. School history (where/ when you have attended)

D. Names and addresses of previous employers, if you have a worked before

E. Date of employment

F. References (maybe a teacher?)

2. Be prepared for an on-the-spot interview. Get some great interview tips.

3.Know what days/hours you are available to work.

What to wear??

Dress should be, at the least, neat and tidy.

Try not to dress too trendy unless you are applying at a business that would require trendy employees (some restaurants or clothing stores)

Make sure your hair and fingernails are well groomed.

Wear moderate shoes.

If you have piercings you might want to consider removing some of them while you are job searching. Learn more about what to wear to an interview.

What questions you should ask:

What are the major responsibilities of this position?

Describe the ideal candidate for this position

Who would be my supervisor?

How many hours per week should I expect to work?

What days/ times would I be working?

What is the timeline in filling this position? What are the next steps?

Good luck with your teen job search!
