Salary Negotiation Tips:

1- When to negotiate? Many candidates make the mistake of discussing salary in the first interview. This is a big mistake. Salary should not be discussed unless the interviewer asks you to state your salary expectations. The best time to negotiate salary is once you have an offer on the table. This lets you know that the employer believes that you are the best candidate for the job and is therefore more willing to discuss options.

2- When it is too late to negotiate? When you have already accepted the offer! Candidates often feel they must accept a job offer “on the spot”. Nothing can be further from the truth. Most employers will expect you to ask for some time to review the offer – so take the time! If you already have an offer, view my page on the table salary negotiations to learn how best to communicate during these negotiations.

3- What can be negotiated? The quick answer is almost anything. However, you need to make sure that your negotiation requests are reasonable and in-line with the job level and industry that you are planning to work in. So, make sure that you have done your homework and know what industry standards are for your negotiation points. Here are some of the areas you can negotiate:

  • a. Base Salary
  • b. Bonus or commissions
  • c. Car allowances
  • d. Profit Sharing
  • e. Share plans
  • f. Start of insurance plan, healthcare plans

  • j. Relocation expenses
  • k. Training and development feeds
  • l. Equipment
  • m. Flex-time
  • n. Parking space, expenses
