Dirty Facts About Newspaper Ads for Jobs Revealed

Newspaper ads for jobs are another good way to see the jobs available in our area of interest.

One challenge with answering an ad is that the potential employer will most likely receive a large number of responses making it more difficult for you resume to stand out.

Here are several suggestions to help you tailor your Cover Letter and Resume that will be put on top of the pile and to ultimately gain an interview!

1. Read the ads carefully and underline all important information (job title, required qualifications, deadline for submission, contact name etc)

2. Only respond to ads where your knowledge and experience are a good fit.

3. Your cover letter is extremely important. Make sure to show how your experience meets the requirements outlined in the ad. Do not make reference to requirements that you do not meet.

Do include the name of the contact person on the letter (you may have to call the company to find out the name).

4. Tailor your resume to respond to the job requirements out-lined in the ad.

5. Keep a detail record of the ads you respond to (you may loose track if you respond to several). The best way is to staple the ad to a copy of the cover letter and resume sent.

Remember to be considered for your perfect job, you must present yourself as the perfect candidate.

The only way for you to do this is by presenting qualifications in the same terminology as the newspaper ad uses.

(I.e. If the company is looking for a sales representative, don’t present yourself as having extensive experience as a sales associate).
