Thinking About Making A Career Change?

Things to consider if you are pondering making a career change.

There are many reasons to considering to making a career change. Some of you may have been downsized in an struggling industry, others feel the need to make a mid-life career change.

But before you hand in your resignation make sure that you have thoroughly considered why you are looking at changing and what your options are.

Good Reasons for making a Career Change:

1- You dread going to work every day.

  • Are you experiencing a lot of stress (work overload, you lack the qualifications to do the job, etc)?
  • Do you feel like you are “burning out”?
  • Are you simply bored with the work?
  • Most of us spend more time at work than at any other activity. If you are experiencing an extreme amount of stress or if you are not getting personal satisfaction/ personal growth from this career, you may need to look at your options.

2-There is no room for advancement in this career. You have reached the top.

3- Your job no longer fits your life style. e.g. You have started a family and you are no longer able to travel extensively

4- The pay is not good. If you are not able to meet your financial obligations, you may need to look at other options.

5- Your industry is downsizing. Even if your job is secure right now, if your industry is not doing well, it is time to consider your options!

6- You have a passion and want to pursue it.

Bad Reasons for making a Career Change.

1- You dread going to work every day.

    • Are you good at your job, but work in an unhealthy environment (uncooperative colleagues, a difficult boss)?

This is a good reason to change your environment but not necessarily a reason to change careers. Take the time to really evaluate what you are feeling and what will make you ultimately happy.

2- Your current career does not utilize your strengths.

    • Before making a complete career change, consider if can you modify your current position to utilize your strengths? With more training could you access a promotion that would put your skills to work?

3- Your friends/family say you could do better.

    • If you love what you do, keep doing it!

4- You see others making a lot of money.

Remember, money is not everything. You must enjoy the work you do! No amount of money will make up for spending 8+ hours doing a job you hate.

Changing careers is an exciting and stressful time. Make sure that you have a plan and have considered the career change training you will require to be successful.
