The Ultimate Guide on
How to Make a Resume

The following tips on how to make a resume will not only help you build a resume that gets you noticed but gets you interviews.

1. Treat your resume as a personal ad or brochure. To do this you need to spend a lot of time developing and testing it.

2. Make sure you resume is well laid out and easy to read. Leave plenty of white space.

3. Use concise, unambiguous sentences. Avoid flowery writing styles.

4. Most Resumes follow a chronological order beginning with your most recent work/school work. However, before starting you should make sure all dates are accurate.

5. Make sure to spend the more time detailing the your most current positions and accomplishments. A title and brief job description will suffice for positions held more that 15 years ago.

6. Review your resume to make sure that it is grammatically correct. Check spelling and verb tenses.

7. Use actions verbs to describe situations. Sentences should start with an action word.

8. Your resume should be 2-3 pages in length. Do not make the mistake of trying to include all information. Your resume should read like a brief summary of your career and experiences not a biography. Keep the details for the interview.

9. Focus on infomation which is relevant to your career goals.

10. Never lie on a resume. An experienced interviewer will be able to see through your "fabrications”.

11. No need to include your age, sex or marital status.

12. Explain any gaps in your work experience (Returned to school, traveled, Parental leave).

13. Include a cover letter every time you send out your resume.

14. Reality check: re-read the resume.
