Cover Letter Examples - An Overview

This page will give you the basics on cover letters and includes several cover letter examples.

Many people do not understand the importance of resume cover letters. Cover letters are the first-impression that a potential employer will have of you. The letter will serve as a link between your qualifications and the qualifications being sought.

Here is some information you will need before writing the resume cover letter.

  • Name of Company,

  • Title of the position,

  • Address (mail or e-mail) of the company,

  • Contact person`s name and title,

  • What makes you particularly well suited for the job?

  • What key words will be of interest to the employer?

  • What part of my resume will be of particular interest?

  • Which of my skills should I highlight?

    Follow this template to build your own cover letter:

    Date
    Your name and address

    Name and title of contact person
    Name and address of Company

    Subject (e.g. Position of Sales Manager)

    Dear ___,

    1st paragraph: introduce yourself. Make reference to a personal contact, previous telephone conversation, research you have done. This will help you stand out from other candidates (e.g. I have been told by John Doe, district manager at your company, that you are currently looking for...)

    If you do not have any of the above, just generally introduce your self and state your interest in the position.

    2nd paragraph: Sell your self. Link your qualifications to the job qualifications. Sell past experience. Being the paragraph by demonstrating that you have a good understanding of the job requirements. (e.g. I understand that your organisation is looking at expanding its distribution center and are looking for line managers)

    Begin the paragraph with your qualifications that would be of special interest.

    3rd paragraph: the conclusion: why would you be suited to this job. Make sure to ask for an interview! (e.g. I look forward to having the opportunity to discuss my qualifications further with you)

    Closing: Add a closing: (e.g. Yours truly,)
