Changing Jobs

by Auntie Chick
(Connecticut, USA)

Hi, I currently work in the school system for one union. I interviewed for a better position in a different union with the same school system. I will lose my 3 years seniority in my current position, if I accept the new position. Should I take the new position for more money and lose my seniority? Thanks.

Hello,

Congratulations on your job offer.

I would advise you to consider the following points prior to making your decision :

Why are you considering the change?
Is it simply for a salary increase? Are you unhappy at your current position? Do you need a new challenge?

What do you mean by better position? Will this move increase your knowledge/ help you gain experience?

Are there “better positions” that you could apply on in your school system that would allow you to make a change and maintain your seniority?

How stable is the teaching market in your city? Will losing your 3 years of seniority put you at a greater risk of being laid off? If yes, how hard would it be to find another job?

Changing positions for the right reasons is a great way to increase, not only your salary, but you work and life experiences. Therefore, it is important to continue to look for new opportunities. Just make sure that you consider all the pro’s, con’s and other options before making your final decision.

Good Luck!
