Change of Job profile

I am a BE graduate and I have 4.5 years of experience in Healthcare KPO. I am working in my current company as senior executive in Accounts receivable dept. Now my company is offering a software job through internal job posting. The platform is Testing(Ajax). I am familiar with Testing tools. I am in a dilemma whether to accept this offer or not. My 4.5 years of experience in KPO would be wasted if i take up the new opportunity. Thanks.

This is a very interesting question.

The best guidance I can give you is to ask you a few questions.

Why are you considering moving positions? Is it because:
1- The software position is an area of high interest to you?
2- Are you currently looking for new challenges that you cannot access in the accounts receivable department?
3- Will experience in the software division make your resume more appealing for future positions inside or outside of your company?
4- Do you like accounts receivable area but are not happy with the department in your current company?

If you are considering the move for reasons 1-3, I would say that it is reasonable to apply on the new position. If you considering the move for reason 4, then I would take the time to evaluate other options.

One last question. Have you discussed this move with your superior? It often is best to speak with your manager before applying on a new position within the same company. It could be awkward if he learns of your interest from another person.
