First impressions: Positive first impressions are critical to your success. To create a positive first impression you should:
Maintain a firm handshake; never offer a weak handshake even to a woman interviewer
Maintain eye contact throughout the interview. If 2 people are interviewing you make sure to look at both persons regularly.
Smile You want to portray the fact that you are a happy, pleasant person that would work well with others. Often candidates allow their nervousness to be portrayed as being aloof or too harsh.
Dress appropriately Dressing for success is key. Learn more about appropriate attire.
Research the potential company. Many interviewers will assess your interest in joining their company based on the time and effort you put into learning about it.
Be prepared to answer the common interview questions. Practice with a friend who will give you honest feedback on your answers.
Concentrate on the employers needs and not your own. If you have researched the company and position you should have a good idea of the qualifications they are looking for.
If you are applying for a manager job but your experience is mainly in marketing, with little management experience, try to show how your skills and experience would allow you to do the job effectively.
Don’t downplay your accomplishments. This is the time and place to show off!
Answer clearly and concisely. Do not ramble on. Make sure to answer the question with clear examples of what you have done. Avoid saying things like I think I would handle that situation by. If you have taken the time to practice the interview questions you should have prepared answers.
If you do not understand the question- say so. Better to ask for clarification than be off track in your answer.
Never ask any questions about salary in the first or second interview. Often the interviewer will ask you about your salary expectations. If you are granted a second interview assume that the company will offer you compensation at the level you expect. Learn more about salary negotiations.
